The Hawaii international film festival introduced in the year 1981 as a mission of the East-West center, an institution developed by the United States congress which is meant for educational and research. This situated on the university of Hawaii Manoa campus here in Honolulu. From that time HIFF is engaged in devoting to the improvement of understanding and the cultural exchange between the people of Asia, North America and the Pacific with the help of films. The first Hawaii international film festival displayed seven films of six countries and there were around 5,000 viewers. Currently, it is a state-wide affair and only one of its types in the United States. There are more than dozen screening sites that it actually has on the six Islands of Hawaii and it brings about 65,000 or even more than that audience from all over the state, the country and all through the globe.

Last year there were more than 70,000 viewers who experienced the images and sounds of excellent filmmaking all around the globe.
