It is the second longest annual running event in the Hawaii after football and carry on one of Polynesia’s & Hawaii's most vital and celebrated cultural traditions, while honouring outrigger canoe paddlers around the world. The Molokai Hoe 2009 would be a 41 mile open ocean race starting from the Lono Harbour and ending at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, Oahu.

The MOLOKA'I HOE 2009 would mark the 56th crossing of the Kaiwi Channel that separates the islands of Molokai and Oahu. The Kaiwi Channel has often been believed to be one of the most untrustworthy spans of ocean in the world. The Molokai Hoe 2009 would test the mental strength and the physical ability of the participants together with courage, endurance, teamwork and determination. The paddlers would be required to battle the most extreme elements of the nature. Canoe paddlers from across the world participate at this historic competition.
